Analysis of HDG methods for Stokes flow

چکیده
In this paper, we analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for numerically solving the Stokes equations. The method uses polynomials of degree k for all the components of the approximate solution of the gradient-velocity-pressure formulation. The novelty of the analysis is the use of a new projection tailored to the very structure of the numerical traces of the method. It renders the analysis of the projection of the errors very concise and allows us to see that the projection of the error in the velocity superconverges. As a consequence, we prove that the approximations of the velocity gradient, the velocity and the pressure converge with the optimal order of convergence of k+1 in L2 for any k ≥ 0. Moreover, taking advantage of the superconvergence properties of the velocity, we introduce a new element-by-element postprocessing to obtain a new velocity approximation which is exactly divergence-free, H(div)-conforming, and converges with order k+2 for k ≥ 1 and with order 1 for k = 0. Numerical experiments are presented which validate the theoretical results.

An analysis of HDG methods for the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation of the Stokes problem in three dimensions
We provide the first a priori error analysis of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for solving the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation of the three-dimensional Stokes equations of incompressible fluid flow. By using a projection-based approach, we prove that, when all the unknowns use polynomials of degree k ≥ 0, the L2 − norm of the errors in the approximate vorticity and p...
متن کاملA Hybridized Discontinuous Galerkin Method on Mapped Deforming Domains
In this paper we present a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization for unsteady simulations of convection-dominated flows on mapped deforming domains. Mesh deformation is achieved through an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian transformation with an analytical mapping. We present details of this transformation applied to the HDG system of equations, with focus on the auxiliary gradient...

In this paper we present an output-based adaptive method for unsteady simulations of convection-dominated flows on deformable domains. The target discretization is the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method (HDG), which offers potential computational savings at high order compared to the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. Mesh deformation is achieved through an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian ...
متن کاملHybridizable discontinuous Galerkin projection methods for Navier-Stokes and Boussinesq equations
Schemes for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and Boussinesq equations are formulated and derived combining the novel Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method, a projection method, and Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta (IMEX-RK) time-integration schemes. We employ an incremental pressure correction and develop the corresponding HDG finite element discretization including consistent edge-spac...
متن کاملFrom Godunov to a unified hybridized discontinuous Galerkin framework for partial differential equations
By revisiting the basic Godunov approach for linear system of hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) we show that it is hybridizable. As such, it is a natural recipe for us to constructively and systematically establish a unified HDG framework for a large class of PDEs including those of Friedrichs’ type. The unification is fourfold. First, it provides a single constructive procedure ...
متن کاملA Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes Equations
In this paper, we present a Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the solution of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The method is devised by using the discontinuous Galerkin approximation with a special choice of the numerical fluxes and weakly imposing the continuity of the normal component of the numerical fluxes across the element interfaces. This allows the ...
